This past Friday, November 17, marked the 43rd anniversary of Bayumi’s demise.

He was born in 1905 in Egypt’s Menofia Governorate. He learned the Quran at elementary school and then went to study the seven styles of Quran recitation with Sheikh Hassan Subh.

He also learned musical Maqamat (scale of tunes) and then started signing religious songs and reciting religious supplications.

Bayumi went to Cairo and soon gained fame as a qari and Ibtihal reciter.

He was among the first qaris who recorded their recitations of the Surahs of the Quran at the Near East Radio, which was established in 1940.
